Mammography Services
Breast cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer deaths in American women. In fact, one in eight women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. A key to successful cancer treatment is early detection. With this in mind, St. Alexius Hospital urges women to have mammograms performed on a regular basis.

A mammogram is a simple X-ray procedure used to evaluate breast tissue. It can detect extremely small breast cancers that are too small to discover through breast self-examination or by an experienced physician.

Vital to the early detection and treatment of breast cancer, a mammogram may reveal breast cancers that have not spread to lymph nodes. Such small cancers may be treatable. Early detection of breast cancer using this procedure can help save your life.

Who should receive a mammogram?
The American Cancer Society recommends that women age 40 and older have a mammogram every year. A woman with a history of breast cancer in her family should consult with her physician concerning the need for increased frequency of regular exams.

Although mammography is an effective means of detecting breast cancer, it does not detect all breast cancers. In addition to the mammogram, we recommend that you perform breast self-examination once a month and that you receive an annual physical breast exam by a physician.

How is mammography performed?
Screening mammography is an X-ray image of your breasts using low-dosage radiation. A female radiologic technologist positions you for the exam, which includes two X-ray views of each breast, during which compression is applied. The compression of the tissue is important to ensure a clear X-ray of the breast and to allow for smaller tumors to be detected. You may experience some discomfort during the exam, especially if it is performed during a time in your menstrual cycle when your breasts are tender.

A mammogram can detect very small lumps that cannot be felt by you or your doctor. The ability of mammography to detect cancer in its early stages improves the treatment of breast cancer because the tumor may still be confined to the breast.

How should I prepare for the mammogram?
We ask that you do not apply deodorant to your underarms or powders or other toiletries to your breasts so as not to affect the accuracy of the test. In addition, we suggest that you wear a two-piece outfit rather than a dress, as you will need to undress from the waist up.

Where will I have my mammogram?
The Radiology Department at St. Alexius Hospital performs the mammogram and is located on the second floor of the hospital.

How do I make an appointment?
To make your appointment for a mammogram, please call the Radiology Department at 314-865-7960.

When will I be notified of the results?
You will be notified of the results by mail. We can provide results to both you and your personal physician. If you need a physician, we will be happy to assist with a referral. Your X-rays will be on file at St. Alexius for future reference.

Will my insurance pay for a mammogram?
Most insurance policies cover screening mammography. We recommend you contact your insurance provider to verify coverage. We also accept Medicare.
